Wet Plate Collodion Studio
Wet collodion is an old photographic technique invented in the mid-19th century, which still has its enthusiasts. A portrait studio using this method offers a unique experience that differs from modern digital photography.
What is the wet collodion technique?
This technique involves applying a layer of collodion (a mixture of nitrocellulose and ether) to a glass or metal plate. The plate is then immersed in silver nitrate, which makes it light-sensitive. In this form, it must be exposed and developed in a darkroom before it dries – hence the name “wet” collodion. This process requires precision and speed, because there is very little time from the moment the collodion is applied to the end of exposure and development.
Why are portraits using this technique unique?
Uniqueness – Each photo is one of a kind, because the plate used to create the image is unique and cannot be duplicated.
Unique aesthetics – Wet plate collodion portraits have a unique, nostalgic feel, with deep shadows, soft tonal transitions, and a wealth of detail.
Creative process – The photo session is a long and ceremonial process, and the very moment of creating the image has something of a ritual to it.
Longevity – A well-preserved collodion plate can last for centuries, making it a lasting keepsake.
What does a portrait session look like?
Preparation – The photographer prepares the plate by covering it with collodion and making it photosensitive.
Posing – The person being portrayed must remain still for a certain period of time (a few to a dozen or so seconds), depending on the lighting conditions.
Exposure – A photo is taken, usually using a large format camera.
Development – The photographer takes the plate to the darkroom, where the image is immediately developed.
Fixing and drying – Finally, the image is fixed and dried.
Who is this experience for?
Wet collodion portraits are perfect for people who value art, craftsmanship and authenticity. Such a photo can be a great gift, a family keepsake or even a work of art to hang on the wall.
